West Bengal is an Indian state, located in East India on the Bay of Bengal. It borders Bangladesh in the east and Nepal and Bhutan in the north. West Bengal is a major agricultural producer and is the is the sixth-largest contributor to India's GDP. Rice, potato, jute, sugarcane and wheat are the top five crops of the state. It is the largest producer of rice and the second largest producer of potatoes in India. West Bengal GDP is US$140.68 billion in the year 2015-16. In 2015, the West Bengal economy and industrial sector grew at a faster rate than the national average. West Bengal is a front ranking state in micro and small scale industries. There are up to 10,000 registered factories in the state including several steel plants in addition to the steel plant at Durgapur. West Bengal is one of the country's leading exporters of finished leather goods.
The state capital Kolkata (Calcutta) is the third-largest city in India also known as the "cultural capital of India". Kolkata is a major river-port in eastern India. The Kolkata Port Trust manages Kolkata docks and the Haldia docks. Kolkata is home to many industrial units including Steel, Mining, Minerals, Cement, Heavy engineering, Pharmaceuticals, Food processing, Agriculture, Electronics and Textiles.
